In the series, the episodes generally end with the main characters praying to the Virgen de Guadalupe and taking responsibility for their mistakes and learning from them through divine intervention. In this particular episode, the character is in a relationship, and cheats on his girlfriend with a stranger he meets at a club. The woman he met in the club leaves an ominous message, and because they had unprotected sex, he begins to fear that he has contracted AIDS. The moral of the episode is essentially that casual sex is bad - not really because of infidelity, but because it undermines the sanctity of sex for reproductive purposes and the institution of marriage. Along with this, there are many other subversive messages within the episode about power dynamics within a relationship, gender roles, and expectations about sex for men and women. The investigators examined the attitudes and knowledge level of Latinas on either side of the border in regards to breast cancer. The results show that Mexican Latinas are on average more knowledgeable about breast cancer than US Latinas. This was attributed to a breast cancer awareness campaign in Mexico. However, Mexican Latinas were less likely to seek out professional preventive care such as mammograms, and instead used self-examination as their primary form of detection. The action component of the panel is to give NOW activists a roadmap as to how they can work in their local communities with Latina groups/organizations in furthering a common agenda. The workshop is 1-1/2 hours. We can limit the presentations to 15-20 minutes each and then have time for discussion/questions. How does this sound?
