It is an example of the differences first and second generation immigrants to America feel about their identity and heritage. Henry, the son of first generation immigrants from Mexico, identifies as neither Mexican or American, whereas Oliverio still has strong ties to his life in Mexico. "Oliverio: Those gringos like to use Spanish names for everything now. One time, everything around here was in Spanish. They turned all the hills and the streets and even the towns into English. Now, they turn those words into Spanish and sell it as high real estate. Hacienda Hights, ugh. La Plaza de Mio, ehhh. Yorba Linda. Such a travesty to corrupt a beautiful language. At least their gardeners say the names correctly. Henry: My girlfriend is Chicana. Oliverio: Don't use that word. Henry: Why not? Oliverio: It means very little. Henry: What do you mean? Oliverio: It means you accept not being Mexicano or Americano. Henry: Well, in a way, we aren't."
