Following patterns of U.S. Cold War imperial efforts abroad The United States provided weapons and training to the military junta set to overthrow Allende. This collection highlights an interview with late president Salvador Allende, a glimpse of student led protest against U.S. imperialism in Latin America, and an article detailing a Chile-Texas exchange program that existed in the years prior to Pinochet’s reign. All archives presented here are a part of the "Guide to the Alice Embree Papers" collection in the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History. Alice Embree is a native Austinite and UT alumnae. While a student at the University of Texas she was involved in Students for a Democratic Society as well as a part of UT's exchange program with Chile. She was an influential activist at UT writing extensively against imperialism during and following the Vietnam War. Description An account of the resource On March 22, 1984 former secretary of state Henry Kissinger spoke outside of the LBJ school of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin. This flyer promotes a protest that was held in response to Henry Kissinger’s foreign policies during the Nixon administration. He is depicted wearing a ring engraved with the words “Wall Street” representing the influence that multinational corporations have historically had on U.S. foreign policy. Kissinger and the Nixon presidency are intimately tied to the military junta that ruled Chile from 1973-1990. While both initially denied involvement in the overthrow of democratically elected President Salvador Allende, government documents later released revealed that the CIA did play a significant role in the 1973 Chilean coup d’état. Additionally, while Kissinger had suggested that a socialist government in Latin America presented a national security threat to the United States, released documents disclosed that he did not believe that Allende’s Chile posed a true threat, suggesting economic motivations as represented by the flyer. Title A name given to the resource "The African Mbira"; 60 Minutes Special on the "Wilmington Ten" Description An account of the resource This is a tape recording of a 60 minutes special on the event known as the "Wilmington Ten." The tape is, thus, mislabeled and the contents do not accurately reflect the label. The reasons behind Aweusi's mislabeling are unknown. The Wilmington Ten, however, is an important event in black history in America. This event took place in Wilmington, North Carolina in which a white-owned grocery store in a historically black neighborhood was fire-bombed. The perpetrators were white supremacists who were framing the attendees of a black church next to the grocery store. 9 men and 1 woman -- i.e., the Wilmington Ten -- who were attendees of the church were wrongfully charged with the bombing and sentenced to 29 years in prison. The Wilmington Ten spent nearly a decade in prison before winning their appeal case. The 60 minutes recording on this tape covers these events. Title A name given to the resource "Tradición Oral" (Oral Tradition Mural) by Raul Valdez Subject The topic of the resource Still image depicting the "Tradición Oral" (Oral Tradition) mural by Raul Valdez Description An account of the resource This mural was painted by Raul Valdez on the 2300 block of East 2nd Street, Austin, TX in 1977. It was destroyed by the City of Austin Graffiti abatement program. The mural depicts (L to R) an open book with blank pages in front of a mesoamerican pyramid, a diagonal stalk of corn with a long-haired figure jumping to reach the corn, an elderly Chicano woman with white hair and gold earrings with a speech bubble ringed in pink, yellow, green and red circles by her mouth. Inside the speech bubble is a three-faced mask floating above a white banner that reads "Mi Raza Primero" ("My People First"). A Chicano family comprised of a father, a mother holding a baby, and a child stand together. The child is wearing a t-shirt that reads "Tierra O" and has an illustration of a soldier from the Mexican Revolution, a reference to La Alianza (The Alliance), a Hispanic land rights organization active in the late 1960s. He also wears a red bandana on his forehead. The entire family looks towards the old woman. On the far right of the mural, an eagle grabs a rattlesnake from a cactus. Behind the eagle is a long yellow building.
