Tenemos bocas para gritar, manos para defendernos y pies para marchar[."] Chicanos from all over Texas came to show support for their Chicano brothers. Transcript (right): self DETERMINATION The two year two month struggle of the Austin Chicano Huelguistas have brought home to us a very important reality of American justice. The U.S. labor movement fought very hard over 40 years to gain the rights of collective bargaining for American workers. This was done under the concept that only through unity could workers stand up against the political, social, and economic powers of those that control capital. Collective Bargaining has thus become an integral part of the American system. The AFL-CIO has been very effective in organizing workers under the flag of unionism and has accomplished rather impressive gains for the white worker. Nevertheless, as has happened in too many cases, the Chicano has been left out of this important facet of American progress. Take the case of the farmworkers, for example. This segment of labor is not even under the jurisdiction of the National Labor Relations Board (the federal labor mediating board), and consequently Cesar Chavez was forced to take his case to the public for five bitter years before the United Farm Workers were recognized by the grape growers of California. Here in Texas the farmworkers have met the opposition of the courts. In the summer of 1967, the courts filed a temporary injunction against picketing, and overnight broke the popular strike leaving the Chicano farmworkers without their principal weapon of defense. It has been three and a half years since this temporary ruling was passed, and still there is no hope that the case will even be seen by the courts in the near future. How can this country ever expect us to have respect for their laws? In the case of the Austin huelguistas, the National Labor Relations Board has declared the union legitimate and has officially ruled that Economy Furniture must bargain with the strikers. Yet Milton Smith has seen fit to unjustly use his economic powers to force the issue, and has consequently brought the legal system to bear against the Austin Chicano Strikers. The result has been that over 250 Chicano families have been forced to exist without work for over two years now. Again no legal end is seen to this struggle which has in fact been given the sanction of the law. If the Courts can break a strike immediately as they have done in the Valley, why cannot they at the very least make a speedy ruling in the Austin case and end the hunger tactics of Milton Smith? Far too long now Chicano workers have been seen by gringos as mere beasts of burden to be exploited, humiliated, and robbed for the benefit of the rich. Consequently Chicano workers have not been given the basic human right of being heard collectively. Time and time again we have seen how Chicano rights have never seen the light of justice due to the racism of the system. This cannot be allowed to continue. In the first place we must realize that Chicanos can no longer depend upon gringo laws to cure our ills. The farmworkers and the Austin strikers are showing us that only through our own efforts, through Chicano unity, can the Chicano community ever gain the power to determine its own destiny. Many of those who have some knowledge of the Austin Chicano Huelga against Economy Furniture Co. are often not aware of the unfailing strength and unity that the huelgistas, men and WOMEN, have maintained for two long years. Surprisingly enough, a very significant and up until now unrecognized participant and leader of this battle has been the Chicana women. There are 250 heulgistas officially striking Economy Furniture Co.; 40% of these strikers are women--Chicanas. This means that about 100 women voted to go on strike in November of 1968. These huelgisatas Chicanas are for the most part mujeres con familia, the number of children in any one family varying from two to seven. And as hard as this fact may come to many of us, most of the women are single or without men to assist financially or otherwise with the familia. Thus, child-care is a constant problem for the women when help is needed at the picket line. And since most of the women have familial tasks to complete, in addition to their daily duties as huelgistas, it has been extremely difficult for them to maintain the enthusiasm and hope that has kept the Huelga alive. But they have continued picketing daily from early morning to late afternoon alongside the men, bravely and valiantly. It is obvious to me that in this struggle of LA RAZA, the Chicanos, both men and women have participated equally. The Chicanas of the Austin Chicano Huelga present an interesting challenge to the originally Anglo notion that the women in the Chicano culture passively allow thing to happen to them, that they relegate themselves to background roles, and that they are content with the status of their social roles (submissive) rather than the activity and content of these roles (that Chicanas just accept their roles in society unquestioningly, i.e., they do as they told). However, the women in this case have efficiently dispelled this stereotype. A majority of the women have been directly involved from the beginning of the Huelga, picketing, leafletting, marching, making signs and posters. ALL of these duties are equally squared--men and women picket together in the rain and ice, in freezing and scorching temperatures in front of the factory. The Chicanas have suffered many of the physical hardships the same as the men. In this case, the Chicanas chose to make themselves the leaders because they realized the immediate need of their involvement in this just struggle. And they will fight til the end. The women of LA RAZA, the huelgistas Chicanas have had to break not their own tradition (for it is my own belief that this stereotype has existed only in the Anglo mind), but the Anglo tradition of cultural imposition and economic enslavement of our people in our own lands. We the mujeres have had to levantar nuestras carabinas against the Gringo in order to survive for tomorrow This is why las Chicanas de la Huelga have earned the respect and admiration of their fellow brothers. But in spite of these unfortunate incidents, which confront us daily - far from feeling humiliated or defeated - our spirit and determination continues to grow and with it, our confidence of victory. During these two years we have learned many things. We have been exposed to the uglier side of America. Description An account of the resource Transcript (left): Arrested in Victoria After suffering through two years of Gringo injustice that Austin Chicano strikers have had yet another encounterwith Gringo oppression. At a demonstration in front of a Lacks Furniture store located in Victoria, four demonstrators were arrested while they were passing out leaflets urging consumers to boycott Economy Furniture products. The four arrested were Lencho Hernandez, Genaro Hernandez, Brenda Silva, and Jesse Hernandez. Three of the four are members of the union on strike against Economy Furniture Company. The other, Brenda Silva is a student at the University of Texas. She was arrested when she asked an officer for her camera which had been seized by the police and until now has not been returned. An additional person was arrested the following day. Ramon Villa, who had not participated directly in the demonstration but had been king enough to let the strikers stay at his homewhile they were in Victoria. This only amplifies the injust actions of the police against the Huelgistas, who were charged with disorderly conduct, unlawful assembly, mass picketting, and trespassing. Bonds totaled more than $10,000 for the five arrested. If the charges seem ridiculous one only has to know that Victoria is the home base for the Lacks Furniture chain, which buys Economy Furniture products. Lacks is a big power in Victoria due to the fact that he controls a large party of the economy in Victoria.With this power he can use the law in any way that he wishes as he did against the Huelgistas. THe situation faced by the Huelgistas in Victoria is not unique but rather common. La Raza suffers this type of oppression daily throughout Aztlan.Gringo justice only works in their benefit and against the Chicano. To subject ourselves to this form of one-sided justice is foolish.The game played is done with their own rules. Now is the time to start making our own rules. Milton Smith, owner of Economy Furniture, defies the law by refusing to reconize the union, and he keeps on making money. The Huelgistas, on the other hand fail to obey and unlawful police order within three minutes and the are immediately thrown in jail.
