Drawing on records from the Texas State Board of Control and the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, the collection presents primary evidence that the state of Texas failed to meet even the minimum standard of separate but equal established by Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) in its provision of care and education for Black deaf, blind, and visually impaired students. Items in this collection document conditions at the Deaf, Dumb and Blind Institute for Colored Youths including poorly maintained grounds, inadequately clothed students, and student-funded music programs, and compare them against the extensive state-funded resources documented at the white Texas School for the Blind. The collection further demonstrates how the 1928 Austin City Plan compounded these inequalities by displacing the Black institution and limiting transportation access for its students. Together these items illustrate how racial segregation produced material inequality for Black disabled students in Austin, and how government policy shaped who had access to resources and care. Following patterns of U.S. Cold War imperial efforts abroad The United States provided weapons and training to the military junta set to overthrow Allende. This collection highlights an interview with late president Salvador Allende, a glimpse of student led protest against U.S. imperialism in Latin America, and an article detailing a Chile-Texas exchange program that existed in the years prior to Pinochet’s reign. Title A name given to the resource "A Chile-Texas Connection" Subject The topic of the resource The Chile-Texas exchange program Description An account of the resource Between the years of 1959 and 1967 the University of Texas had an extensive exchange program with Chile. The exchange program was ended when Chile began experiencing political turmoil that resulted in a CIA backed coup leading to a decades long repressive dictatorship under Augusto Pinochet. Alice Embree wrote about a reunion between some members of the program after it had come to an end in an article published in 1984 in the Texas Observer. According to Embree, a man named Federico Willoughby who was both a participant of the exchange program and later a central member of Pinochet’s military junta was in attendance that night. She describes an atmosphere that attempted to celebrate Chilean culture but neglected to address the current crisis facing the country as millions were affected by Pinochet’s violent regime.
