Description
Onda Latina was a faculty-student joint effort to share the Mexican American experience with the university community as well as the public. Episodes cover a range of topics facing not just UT Austin, but Chicanx people. The show ran from 1976-1982 and has 226 individual episodes in its digital collection. This digital repository is housed in the Benson Latin American Collection at the University of Texas at Austin.
In Episode 22, Host Armando Gutiérrez interviews Dr. Isabel Pritchard, a visiting professor of government at UT Austin. Pritchard explains the cultural significance of the Bakke suit against the University of California System. She outlines potential outcomes of the case prior to the SCOTUS decision.
Following this episode, SCOTUS would eventually rule that using racial quotas in university admissions is unconstitutional, while using affirmative action is constitutional in some contexts.
