An Interview with Allende: "You don't get socialism overnight"
Subject
Salvador Allende, Democracy, and Imperialism in Chile
Description
Saul Landau conducted this interview with Salvador Allende in Santiago in 1971. The interview was later translated into English and published in the NACLA’s 1973 publication New Chile. Landau and President Allende engaged in conversation surrounding policies between the United States and Chile and Chile’s movement towards democratic socialism. Salvador Allende speaks about the effects of imperialism on the economies in Chile and other Latin American countries. Some of Allende’s biggest policy reforms revolved around self determination and the elimination of imperialism, including increasing worker control in factories and nationalizing American owned copper mines. In response to these projects, the United States imposed economic sanctions on Chile and eventually supported and helped fund a military coup d’etat to overthrow Salvador Allende. Prior to the 1973 coup, Chile enjoyed 40 years of free elections and uninterrupted democracy. Allende discussed his steadfast commitment to democracy, explaining the strategies and struggles to obtain socialism within a democratic framework.
