The Star
With apologies to Jane Taylor

Twinkle, twinkle, Helen Marr,
You're an angel, yes, you are,
Up above the world so high,
Like a diamond in the sky,

When the college son has gone
Bent the flirting girls upn,
Then you show your little light
Twinkle, twinkle, all the night.

If the couples on a lark
Ask not for your tiny spark,
They couldn't see which way to go,
If you did not twinkle so.

In the dark background you keep,
And ne'er upon the couples peep;
But you never shut your eye,
Though the lovers wonder why.
Long may your bright beaming spark
Light the students in the dark,
Take our love for what you are,
Twinkle, twinkle, Helen Marr.

The Little Fresh That Would Not Do As He Was Bid

With apologies to Jane and Anne Taylor
"Mrs. Kirby," said a student Fish,
"Pray, is not that a fly?
I'm very hungry and I wish
You'd let me go and try."

"Sweet Innocent," Mrs. Kirby cried,
And started from her nook,
"That horrid fly's dressed to hide
The sharpness of the hook."

Now, as I've heard, this little trout
Was young and foolish, too
And so he thought he'd venture out
To see if it were true.

And round about the girls he played
With many a longing look,
And, "Dear me," to himself he said,
"I'm sure that's not a hook."

"I can but give one little pluck,
Let's see, and so I will."
Thus on he went, and lo, it stuck
Quite through his little gill.

As he, love-sick and sicker grew,
With hollow voice he cried–
"Mrs. Kirby, had I minded you,
I need not thus have died."
