Description

Typed financial statement covering the school term September 15, 1924 through June 19, 1925, documenting the accounts of two student organizations at the Deaf, Dumb and Blind Institute for Colored Youths: the Burse Music Club and the Mutual Aid and Social Club. The statement notes that prior to 1924 the Burse Music Club surrendered control of its funds to the superintendent, but that in 1925 the club assumed full control of its own affairs and re-deposited funds under a student committee at the American National Bank in Austin. The document is signed by Superintendent J.D. Martin. The existence of a student-funded music club at the Deaf, Dumb and Blind Institute for Colored Youths stands in direct contrast to the fully state-funded music program at the Texas School for the Blind, where the 1930-1931 catalogue lists a Director of Music, a Teacher of Piano Tuning and Repairing, multiple piano teachers, a Teacher of Voice, a Teacher of Violin, and a Teacher of Band Instruments all provided at state expense to white disabled students.
