Description

Two-page staff roster from the 1930-1931 catalogue of the Texas School for the Blind, Austin, Texas, listing the State Board of Control members, administrative officers, teaching faculty, and support staff of the institution. The roster documents an extensive music faculty including a Director of Music, a Teacher of Piano Tuning and Repairing, multiple piano teachers, a Teacher of Voice, a Teacher of Violin, and a Teacher of Band Instruments, all funded by the state of Texas. Additional faculty include teachers for every grade from kindergarten through high school, industrial arts instructors, a librarian, a head nurse, seamstresses, and multiple housemothers. The breadth and depth of this faculty roster stands in direct contrast to the Deaf, Dumb and Blind Institute for Colored Youths, where Black disabled students were required to fund their own music club, the Burse Music Club, through private fundraising rather than state appropriation. This document illustrates how racial segregation produced material inequality in educational resources for disabled students in Austin, falling short of the separate but equal standard established by Plessy v. Ferguson (1896).
