Description

Two pages from the Catalogue of the Texas School for the Blind, 1930–1931, documenting institutional philosophy regarding student character, dependency, and civic obligation. The first page contains a section titled "The Dangers of This Free Education," warning against students developing a sense of entitlement from state-provided care and asserting that gratitude is insufficiently cultivated in students' homes. Page 15 continues this philosophy, arguing against teaching blind students that they are dependent on charity, and frames state expenditure of over $500 per student annually as an investment requiring returns in useful lives and good citizenship. A section on Promotions details academic advancement requirements. These pages are a primary source for examining the ideological framework governing the white Texas School for the Blind and invite comparison with contemporaneous documentation of conditions at the segregated Deaf, Dumb and Blind Institute for Colored Youths.
