Institutional Perspective
At an institutional level, the University of Texas at Austin creates new departments to pilot the university’s community interest programs. Many of these departments are created with the intention of providing greater resources to underserved communities at the university in order to provide all students with an equal opportunity for academic success. The creation of new departments serving specific community initiatives at UT Austin can serve as an indication the university administration has identified a failure to address the needs of different students. Today, UT Austin has a Department of Diversity and Community Engagement. The university has come a long way towards recognizing where there are gaps in its service of the university community. Our goal in this section is to highlight different departments the university has created to fill these gaps at an institutional level across the university's history.
