Vietnamese Diaspora: Learning to Find Home

Abstract

This collection investigates generational differences in education within the Vietnamese diaspora, with a focus on the concept of home in shaping these experiences. Each generation faces their own set of unique challenges in their quest to establish a sense of belonging, with education often emerging as a key strategy. Archival evidence includes photographs captured by American photographer Dick Swanson during and after the Vietnam War and the Vietnamese Immigrants Oral History Collection, both housed at the Briscoe Center. The research incorporates scholarship from Vietnamese diaspora members and scholars, and features personal stories shared through interviews and photographs in the archives. Ultimately, this collection underscores the importance of educational freedom and opportunities in the identification of home for the Vietnamese diaspora.
