A Lamp of Hope
The Lamp of Hope Project is an organization that was founded by inmates on Texas’ death row in the summer of 1993. The organization first published a pamphlet that was passed out during a march to abolish the death penalty. The pamphlet does not specify which march this was. It contains personal essays, graphic art, poems, newspaper clippings, and documents that have been printed onto different colors of printer paper. The front and back covers of the pamphlet are purple construction paper to which an emblem and a message printed on printer paper have been adhered. The text is bound by two staples. By examining the media published by The Lamp of Hope Project, one can appreciate the power of self-advocacy through personal narratives as a means of community education and engagement.
