Raza Unida Party Platform
In 1971, the Raza Unida Party in Texas adopted a series of explicit party resolutions that reflected the party's platform and goals. These included demands for greater representation and political power for Mexican Americans in Texas, as well as improved access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunity. The party also called for an end to police brutality and discrimination in the criminal justice system, and for greater protection of the environment (Navarro).
In some ways, the Raza Unida Party's platform was similar to that of the Democratic Party at that time. Both parties supported civil rights and social justice causes, as well as progressive policies on issues such as healthcare and education. However, the Raza Unida Party's platform was more radical and more focused on addressing the specific needs of the Mexican American community in Texas.
The Raza Unida Party's platform was quite different from that of the Republican Party at that time. The Republican Party had not yet established itself as a major political force in Texas during the early 1970s, and its platform was not well-defined (Dyer, 155-57). However, the Republican Party was generally associated with more conservative policies on issues such as taxes, spending, and social programs. In contrast, the Raza Unida Party was more progressive and more focused on addressing issues of inequality and social justice.
